Why Bone Claw Wolverine Sucks & Other Bitching and Moaning

I don't wanna sound like an old fogie, but things where better in my time, and that time was the 90's. This has never been more true than with the X-Books and Wolverine in particular. I know, I know, I am being insanely opinionated right now. Sure I am, but Wolverine and X-Men where on top of the world in the 90's then Marvel had to start "experimenting" with their winning formula. And don't tell me they where just trying to make interesting stories either. The things that they did with him where just dumbfounding.

Wolverine had what superman didn't, the everyman going for him. Sure he was damn near impossible to kill, even though it was completely fathomable, you just never in a million years expected to see your good pal Logan get put on his ass, never in a million years. Wolverine was basically Bruce Willis in every Die Hard movie, bloodied, battered, but still ready to kick your ass in any given situation.

That brings me to my other point, comics back then where not afraid to get dark and violent, and I mean DARK, even with the very steadfast and unyeilding comics code, Wolverine was pushing the boundaries of what kind of psychopath could be seen in comics. Not only by Wolverine himself, but also by the series regulars of Sabertooth & Deadpool. Those two in particular where the two colors that completed the "Wolverine Wheel of Psychopathy". It really was never a dull moment.

Then the unthinkable happened. Wolverine got his metaphorical balls ripped out by Magneto and I watched my hero devolve into a shadow of his former self. It was sad. Presumably this was supposed to make Wolverine more human? It ultimately turned him into an animal, which is quite ironic seeing that he is named after one. This is where the character radically changed and distanced itself from me. He was no longer John Mclaine, he was just a beast, nothing more. Gone was the charming dialog and clever quips. They now wanted to start this very sad and sappy soul searching story arc, and I just could not bear to keep going on reading. The book just lost its flavor to me.

Ever since then I have been looking for a window to jump back into both the X-Men and my good ol buddy Wolvies books. Every time I do, I just get this very jaded feeling coming over me because it seems as though they just keep bulldozing everything I fell in love with and building on this, in what I believed false version of the character. You got new Wolverines. They are constantly revising his origin story. You got his daughter X-23. Nothing ever resonated with me. Perhaps Marvel is looking for Wolverine to take a more back seat role in the new books. He never seemed to be in the forefront like he was in my time, the 90's. Perhaps that day will come again, but I wont hold my breath!

What do you all think out there in the internets?  I would love to hear what you have to say on the matter! Please leave it in the comments section below!
