10 Horror Inspired Marvel Comic Book Characters

Marvel might be riding the Avengers train to the bank right now, however their is certainly a vast and deep variety of characters in the Marvel Stable to choose from. A lot of those are influenced heavily by common horror tropes. Today I share with you some of my favorite horror inspired Marvel characters!

1. Ghost Rider - Cursed by Mephisto, the powerful satanic entity of the Marvel Universe to roam the night as a fiery & hellish avenging spirit,  the supernatural influences in Ghost Rider are undeniable. He is a horror character, there is no doubt about it. What is more terrifying than a man who turns into a flaming skeleton at night, riding a flaming motorcycle? Not much.

2. Morbius - A living vampire. What more can you say. Vampires in the Marvel Universe are nothing new, as Dracula himself had his own running series and is considered to be a canon character in the main Marvel Universe. Morbius however is the most prominent reoccurring vampire in the Marvel universe and can be seen co-starring in several Marvel books.

3. Blade - Not a lot of people really knew that Blade was originally a comic book character when the original movie came out. Even I was unfamiliar until I saw that Marvel logo watching the movie for the first time. Now with comic book movies going more mainstream, he now is even being considered to make an appearance in the new Avengers movie. Now if we can only get Wesley Snipes to do another Blade movie before he gets too old.

4. Demogoblin - There is certainly something horrific about a guy who
will sell his soul for a chance to defeat his enemies. Thats exactly what Demogoblin did and ever since he has been causing further problems for the likes Spiderman and Moon Knight. Just look at that grin and tell me your not horrified!

5. Moon Knight - Another undead entity and current staple of the Marvel U's books. The character actually has been around since the 1930's and is only alive due to do his resurrection in Egypt by a moon god. In the comics themselves he's been around for quite a long time, however has only recently been in the "Moonlight" alongside Marvel  mainstays like Spiderman and Deadpool.

6.  Werewolf by Night - This is arguably the most popular 1970's Marvel horror character, as most of the 1970's horror characters from that time almost never grace the Marvel books anymore, with the exception of Man Thing (mentioned later in this article) & Dracula himself. Wolverine has since easily filled the roll of Marvel's woodland roaming ball of chaos quite nicely.

7. Mephisto - The Devil himself of the Marvel universe. Sure, he goes by the aforementioned fancy moniker, but the evil is all the same. Aside from some well defined super power themed tropes, he essentially is every Catholic priests wet dream. A real fire and brimstone Satan in the comic book flesh!

8.Terror - A somewhat unknown character to the mainstream Marvel fans, Terror is from another plane of earths existence where early primitive humans fought demons for power. Terror, defeated a large bearlike green demon and was cursed to assume its form. Insane story right? Hollywood come a knockin! Anyhow, he has lived throughout the ages and somehow traveled into our plane of existence to fight aloneside the likes of Wolverine, so keep an eye out, you might see him pop up from time to time.

9. Man Thing - Another relic from 1970's Marvel horror comics that somehow found roots with modern fans. Called a knock-off by fans of DC's Swamp Thing,  its hard to deny the clear parallels in both characters. This still does not change the monstrous nature of Man Thing, who looks like he was pulled right out of a 1950's Ed Wood creature feature or depictions of Cthulhu himself.

11.  Detective Fantôme - An incorporeal undead detective, cursed to roam the earth until he can solve the mystery of his own murder. He is basically every horror movie and ghost trope ever conceived.  He sure does look cool though!

Got any sugestions for another list? Even if its for another companies books like DC or Image? Please leave it in the comments below! I would love to hear what you have to say!
